How not to twist, and such secrecy in the world of computer games is rare.

Events StarCraft 2 will unfold four years after the completion of Brood War. The United Earth Directorate suffered a crushing defeat, Mengsk retreated to Korhal, and the winning zerg went to lick their wounds on the volcanic crater Char. Unfortunately (and perhaps fortunately), rumors about the fourth race – a hybrid of protoss and zerg, or even the mythical Xel’Naga itself, were rumors while developing the game, the authors did not forget to disavow carefully all such assumptions. At the moment, work on the plot of StarCraft 2 is completed by hardly a third, but already from the very announcement it was known that without the old friends in the sequel will not do. In addition to Kerrigan, players will see Jim Raynor, Zeratul, and along with them will, of course, and new, no less vivid and memorable personality. And let the primary focus of the developers from Blizzard are the network component, dramatic plot twists, emotional dialogues and carefully designed characters will necessarily become one of the distinctive features of the sequel.

The gameplay will not undergo any drastic changes, but all its main components will be improved and brought to perfection. The bias in micromanagement and fuss with heroes, as it was in WarCraft 3, is not expected, instead, the developers promise large-scale and dynamic battles involving hundreds of units. To please the scale, the creators even went against their old rules and allowed to allocate a green frame and send to the front any number of cannon fodder. Nevertheless, this does not mean at all that the restrictions on the maximum number of troops produced will also go to oblivion. As before, create a huge horde and trample the enemy will not work.

Graphics StarCraft 2, as in all the latest creations of Blizzard, looks colorful and “cartoonish,” although to a lesser extent than in the same WarCraft 3. In other words, any strengths of the new recruits in StarCraft 2 are balanced by the weak, different types of troops perfectly complement each other, which means that it will not be possible to find a simple and universal recipe for victory.

In general, each race received worthy reinforcement in the form of fresh fighters and technology. The Protoss learned how to teleport their armies and set up energy fields at any point of the map, and along with it they got hold of huge walking robots dashing wildly through the uneven terrain. Zerg mastered the cultivation of monstrous worms a la Sci-Hulud from the “Dunes”, the insides of which are able to serve as an underground tunnel for the hordes of slimy creatures, and the terrans were able to build powerful turrets at the command center and transport up to five SCVs for accelerated deployment of bases. Of the new units also worth noting is the huge destructive Mothership Protoss, which can only be built in a single instance, the zerg-Kamikaze Baneling and a new kind of infantry terrains – the Reaper is easily jumping over rocks and cliffs with rocket satchels.

And although the network part of the project is actually ready, to expect the release of StarCraft 2 before 2009 is pointless, because the story campaign still requires careful consideration. However, hardly anyone will be surprised if in the future the release will be postponed, because, according to the developers themselves, to release the game on the market before it is polished to perfection, no circumstances can force them to do so. And about the fact that in the end we will get another masterpiece, the standard of the genre and the object of the worship of millions of players can not even be doubted – otherwise Blizzard simply does not know how.

Even less often the authors of such a project are newcomers to their industry. However, it seems, in the case of Sublustrum, we are dealing with a double exception to the general rule. The beginning studio Phantomery Interactive managed to create an amazing quest. The game really makes an impression and leaves in the soul an imprint, which is usually the privilege of books, films, musical compositions or paintings. In a sense, the word Sublustrum combines all these arts.

The world that built … who?

Adventure is conducted from the first person, so you will not be able to look at the main character. But there will be something to look around. After all, we will gradually sink into a very strange, fascinating and, at times, frightening parallel worlds. And everything begins simply, almost everyday. The professor-physicist dies under mysterious circumstances, leaving his brother (in the sense, our invisible character) to inherit his home with all the contents. Upon closer examination of the dwelling that we got, it turns out that the scientist apparently had quite a roof at the end of her life. Throughout the house wires are stretched, here and there the floor is razed, the books, drawings and theoretical calculations are scattered in disorder. And in the middle of the living room is a very strange device, reminiscent of a booth. The deceased himself, in his diary and gramophone records, calls the device a “capsule” and claims that it can be used to penetrate the parallel “shimmering” world. In this “behind-the-mirror” space, it becomes possible to meet with deceased relatives, childhood memories. True, in exchange, alternative reality splits the personality and gradually takes possession of it.

Obviously, in the process of one of the experiments, the inventor also died. It is clear that, despite the request of his brother not to try to repeat the experiments of his predecessor, our hero will do everything possible to do the opposite. And fall into a surprisingly sad, oppressive, surreal world, filled with debris, debris, stairs that lead to nowhere, and also – boundless loneliness. So it looks like a story at first glance. But, after the complete passage of the game, it seems that everything was completely different. Was there nothing at all?

Circles of hell?

Sublustrum refers to games that you want to interpret and decipher. After all, in the finals, we do not get a denouement or an answer. Only more questions. Such ambiguity of the adventure game, of course, due to a lot of small, it would seem, details that do not fit into the main storyline. What is even more surprising is that after completing the passage, there arises not the usual annoying thought “here and another toy is over”, but a sense of catharsis, purification. And, at the same time – deep melancholy.

Atmosphere Sublustrum captures and completely subjugates itself from the very first minutes of the game. In a strange, surreal world one has to believe unconditionally. Playing music plays an important role in creating a special aura. Dreary is the most correct word to describe it. Sound design flawlessly corresponds to the plot and, in many ways, determines the psychological perception of the game. The visual part seems to be one of the creations of the filmmaker “Solaris” and “Stalker.” Gloomy, deserted rooms and landscapes, an abundance of gray and green tones in color, constantly muffled lighting is perfectly complemented by the “old film effect”. By the way, you can give several interpretations. On the one hand, everything that is happening here is exactly dated – in 1916 the year. Yes, and an inconspicuous note with a “prologue,” which appears before the start of the game is made in the style of the screenplay. So the stylization of the old movie is quite understandable. On the other hand, the screen shaking can be perceived as a kind of a sign of a “shimmering world”. Perhaps, from the very beginning of the game, are we already in a parallel, after-death dimension? A general atmosphere of mystery is complemented by changes that occur with pictures and photographs.

If at first the respectable families with children look at us from the walls, then the farther away, the more disturbing unreal landscapes appear in their places, as if they came from a terrible dream. On the radio, you can hear here and then Akhmatova’s poem, the song of Vertinsky. Another striking effect on the force of impact is a ghost that appears literally for a moment and only from a certain angle. There’s enough key characters, traders, friends and enemies, but nothing prevents the player from graciously repairing the warhead and sending all the megatonov into the deep hell and further up to the heaven. The plot line is so multivariant that it allows, according to the developers, more than two hundred (!) Different endings, and make further passage impossible, erasing one of the key cities with a scarred face of the earth, simply will not work. In general, does not work. And it is not necessary, by the way. In any case, there is a taciturn dusty Washington and – attention – the subway there. An alternative to vehicles, which, it seems, will not be in the game.
